“People smoke for the nicotine, but they die from the tar.”
Professor Michael Russell
Griffith Edwards’ addiction research unit at the Institute of Psychiatry
Unfortunately, despite Professor Russell’s astute observation in 1976, nicotine is still demonised by most of those in tobacco control. Many people who perform research on the harms of tobacco smoke and smoking, report the results as being due to nicotine – ignoring the hundreds of other substances in tobacco smoke (the actual problem).
Nicotine Does Not Cause Cancer
“Nicotine is not associated with cancer”
The National Institute for Health and Care Excellence
Nicotine is not a strong carcinogen (cancer causing agent). If it was, agencies like the Therapeutic Goods Administration of Australia would not have approved it for use in Nicotine Replacement Therapies (patches, gum, lozenges, sprays etc.), and would not have allowed over the counter sales to children as young as twelve years of age.
Nicotine Does Not Cause Heart Disease
“Nicotine does not cause heart disease”
Dr. Konstantinos Farsalinos
Onassis Cardiac Surgery
Department of Pharmacology, University of Patras
Some in the tobacco control industry, talk up results that show that nicotine consumption increases the heart rate. What they fail to mention is that other activities that do the same are:
- Making love.
- Being in love.
- Watching an action or horror movie.
- Riding a roller coaster.
The increase in heart rate caused by nicotine consumption are changes that the human body is capable of handling.
Nicotine Is About as ‘Dangerous’ As Caffeine
“E-cigarettes [with nicotine] are probably about as safe as drinking coffee.”
Robert J. West
Professor of Health Psychology and Director of Tobacco Studies at the
Cancer Research UK Health Behaviour Research Centre
While consumption of nicotine is not advisable for pregnant women, for the rest us it’s more a case of “the dose makes the poison”. At the low levels that it might be consumed from NRT or vapour products, nicotine is about as dangerous as caffeine.
